AB de Villiers reveals the story of his proposal to his wife Danielle

We are pretty familiar with the sight of the power hitting AB de Villiers toying with the fiercest bowlers on the 22 yards, but do we know how the ‘superman’ deals with his wife? It will be safe to say that when it comes to his wife Danielle, it’s the flamboyant batsman who gets knocked out.

AB de Villiers gives us a beautiful description of what happened when the charismatic cricketer proposed his wife in front of the iconic Taj Mahal in Delhi.

De Villiers came across Danielle at a game lodge where he was with her mother for lunch. On finishing the meal, De Villiers was introduced to the owner of the place, John Swart who made him meet his wife and daughter Danielle.

The South African revealed that it was love at first sight as he got bowled over by her beautiful eyes. ‘It was the eyes, the beautiful eyes. The long hair was striking, but it was the eyes that instantly caught my attention. I said hello, she said hello and, amid the family greeting, that was that’, said ABD.

On the way back home, De Villiers asked his mother for the girl’s number and somehow managed to get it. The international player did not waste any time to text the girl and asked her to attend a gathering with his friends.

According to unorthodox stroke player, both of them got busy in their respective fields from their on. Danielle shifted her focus to studies while De Villiers was on his way to becoming one of the best batsmen in world cricket.

Their love got a second chance at his brother’s wedding. De Villiers fell in love once again when he heard Danielle sing his favourite song, but this time with her voice. Danielle moved to Cape Town and the two started meeting frequently.

De Villiers was firm on his decision on marrying Danielle during the start of 2012. The batsman went to meet her parents with the proposal of marriage before leaving for New Zealand. Her parents turned out to be okay with the proposal and supported the cricketer in every way. Danielle’s parents assisted ABD in finding a perfect ring for their daughter too.

De Villiers decided to surprise Danielle during the time of IPL and chose the wonderfully crafted Taj Mahal as the venue. According to the athletic sportsman, there was no better place than the Taj to get engaged.

The proposal:

Taking the opportunity during a match break De Villiers took Danielle to the Taj Mahal. He kept Jim Rydell and Kalveer Biradar, two people from their RCB setup, hidden behind the trees so that they can capture the romantic moment and keep memories of it.

Finally, AB de Villiers went down on his knees. No, not to hit a slog sweep on to the stands, but to recite a speech for the girl he wanted to marry. He ended the speech with the question “You’re the one I want to live with forever. Danielle, will you marry me?”

Shge broke down into tears and gave him a hug. But with no answer from Danielle, AB was caught up in fear.

While he thought that Danielle will reject his proposal he got a bit more impatient and imagined in his head that she’d say ‘Sorry, bud, that was a nice presentation but this is not going to happen. Would you mind if we go back to Bangalore?’. He finally gathered some strength and asked her “Listen, are you going to give me an answer?”

And we all know what happened. AB and Danielle tied the knots the next year at the same place where the first met.
