‘About bloody time’ – Vinoo Mankad’s son on new developments in MCC Laws

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) stated that a bowler running out a non-striker who is backing up too far will now be treated as a runout instead of Unfair play. This mode of dismissal commonly referred to as ‘Mankading’ has caught the limelight in the cricketing world.

And, Rahul Mankad, the son of former Indian cricketer Vinoo Mankad, stated that it is high time that this decision was taken. Rahul also threw light on his personal condition and said that he suffered a heart attack and cardiac arrest. He is currently at a London hospital and is set to undergo surgery.

“My response is – about bloody time! Just (I’m) letting you know that I suffered a heart attack on Friday. They had to put a stent in my heart. Then yesterday I went into cardiac arrest. More surgery tomorrow (sic),” Mankad told Cricbuzz.

Rahul Mankad also said that the spirit of cricket comes into play when a batter is run out at the nonstriker’s end by the bowler. He also gave several examples of batters not walking even after they have nicked the ball, or the fielders claiming a catch even if the ball has bounced in front of them. He also questioned why nobody talks about the spirit of cricket when all these things happen.

“The problem is that this mode of dismissal is now clouded with this spirit of the game stuff. The game has changed and there is little room anymore to take the moral high ground. Batters don’t walk when they nick the ball, fielders claim catches when the ball has clearly bounced in front of them, they even tamper with the ball…Where is the spirit of cricket then? And this is within the law, permissible, what more clarity do they want,” concluded Mankad.

Rahul Mankad featured in 47 first-class matches and scored over 2000 runs at an average of 35.77.
