During an India vs Australia series former Australian wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist was asked how they planned to stop the Indian opener Virender Sehwag? The dashing batter was a nightmare for the opposition and all the teams devised specific plans to get rid of him early in the innings and for cheap or he could dismantle the bowling attack and rip them apart.
Gilly in his response had said ‘Yes, we have planned to lock him in the team hotel,’ though that was a rather sarcastic response at that point in time. He was made to recall the event on Twitter recently with an image that had the comments mentioned upon. Gilchrist tweeted the picture and in the caption wrote that Sehwag was a headache for the team on odd occasions.
He wrote, “Let’s face it… @virendersehwag could create the odd headache for an opposition attack!!”

A look into the records and we know why he chose to write the word ‘the odd headache’ since Viru didn’t quite enjoy a supreme record against the Australians. He batted in 29 ODI innings against the Kangaroos and scored just 629 runs at not a very healthy average. A look at his Test statistics and the numbers get better there. The Indian opener scored 1821 runs against the Aussies in the whites from 45 innings at an average of 41.38 which is pretty close to his career average of 49.34.
At the moment Virender Sehwag is busy commentating in the ongoing India vs Australia ODI series where the hosts are dominating the visitors. They have a 2-0 lead in the series and look pretty much in place to win it.
Though the Indians have been a strong team at home traditionally Australia is always known to make life difficult for the opposition no matter where they play. But this team has been really struggling off late to get their mojo right in the subcontinent and their problems aren’t just restricted to the longer formats as they are found wanting against the Indian wrist spinners in the current series as well.
