India will be taking on Australia in the series-deciding fourth Test starting tomorrow at Dharamsala. Australia, until this point in the series, have defied all expectations with their tremendous fight to stay afloat. With all to play for at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium, Steve Smith’s men would not be happy with a drawn series, opined former wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist.
With the series locked 1-1, a win in Dharamsala will give Australia their first series win in India since 2004, when Gilchrist was the architect of the triumph, covering up for injured captain Ricky Ponting in the first three Tests to guide Australia to series win with a game still remaining. With India unbeatable at home in the recent years, few cricket experts backed Smith’s team to win even a single Test this time round.
“They have exceeded expectations. They, themselves, might not have thought they would be at this point three games in. All credit to them, I think the nation should be very proud of their efforts. But knowing test cricketers, (coach) Darren Lehmann and Steve Smith the way I do, none of those players are going to be satisfied.” Gilchrist told Reuters in an interview in Melbourne.
He further said that Australia will not sit back and relish a draw, but will be very hungry to take the trophy home.
“No-one’s going to be sitting back, saying: ‘job done’. They’ll be so hungry to try to get the job done in this last game. And they’re a chance, a definite chance.” the most successful Australian wicketkeeper said.
Gilly also heaped praises on skipper Smith who made 109 in the Pune Test and an unbeaten 178 in the first innings at Ranchi.
“He’s such an inspirational leader and the greatest compliment I can pay is that the team is clearly on side with him. Unconditional support for him,” Gilchrist said.
