Australia and England’s rivalry is an age-old one. Apart from competition with the cricketing gears, the players from either side have also been involved in some serious verbal exchanges. The antagonists play the Ashes every year and some incident or the other always sparks when these two sides are locking horns. The 2005 Ashes turned out to be one of the most exciting series between them.

England, captained by Michael Vaughan, won the series 2-1. Albeit his team emerged triumphant, the skipper didn’t have an auspicious tournament with 326 runs from five matches at an average of 32.60. He notched out a knock of 166 at the Old Trafford in Manchester, but apart from that, the Australian bowlers dominated him throughout. Adam Gilchrist, the Aussie wicketkeeper-batsman also strained with the willow.

Gilchrist’s reminder to Vaughan

13 years have passed and both cricketers retired a long time ago. Nevertheless, they leave no stone unturned in taking a jibe at each other. Meanwhile, Gilchrist reminded Vaughan of one of his old dismissals against New Zealand back in 2007 at the Gabba in Brisbane. The Englishman opened the batting after his team won the toss and elected to bat first.

Ed Joyce, who recently retired from international cricket, after playing his maiden Test for Ireland against Pakistan, was the other opener and he played out the first over from left-arm pacer James Franklin. Shane Bond was handed the leather from the other end. He ran in and dished out a stupendous toe-crushing Yorker.

The ball also curled in, adding to the viciousness of the delivery. Vaughan jammed down the willow and was clearly late on the stroke. He also lost his balance while playing the shot. In the meantime, the ball snuck through to clatter into the stumps.

Gilchrist posted the video on Instagram and wrote, “Played Skipper! 😂 @michaelvaughan”
