Afghanistan Cricket Board appoints Younis Khan as batting coach

Younis Khan played 117 Tests for Pakistan, scoring more than 10,000 runs in his Test career.

Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan has been appointed as the new batting coach of Afghanistan ahead of the team’s upcoming tour to the UAE. Recently, another former Pakistan player Umar Gul was appointed as the bowling coach of the Afghanistan side, and both are expected to do wonders in the development of the youngsters.

Younis Khan is one of the greatest cricketers to have played for Pakistan. He played 117 Tests in his 17-year long international career after making his debut in 2000. The right-hander scored 10099 runs in his Test career with 34 centuries at an average of 52.1. He has a decent record in ODIs as well. The 44-year old scored 7249 runs in 265 ODIs at an average of 31.2. He played 25 T20 internationals as well.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board CEO mentioned that the upcoming tour to the UAE will present a great opportunity for the youngsters to build their careers and get ready for competitive tournaments later in the year. He added that the inclusion of Younis and Gul in the coaching setup will definitely ease out the area of concern in the batting and bowling departments.

“The UAE camp is a great opportunity for the players to get adequate training in the relevant departments of the game and get fully prepared for future competitions. Younis Khan and Umar Gul have rich experience of international cricket and I am sure they will help our boys overcome the concerns they have got in the batting and bowling departments,” ACB CEO Naseeb Khan said in a statement.

According to Cricbuzz, the Afghanistan national cricket team has left Kabul for the UAE on March 31, aiming to get the UAE residency for a preparatory camp for their upcoming international fixtures this year. Afghanistan last played an international series at the start of March against Bangladesh and managed to draw the two-match T20I series 1-1.
