Cricket Hong Kong has announced that the Hong Kong Sixes will make a comeback in 2017, with the event being scheduled for October 28 and 29 at Kowloon Cricket Club. Eight international teams will take part in what is the fastest cricket format in the world. Each match will take not more than 45 minutes to finish. The last edition was played 5 years ago, and the league is returning to the fore this year.

The tournament this year will also benefit from improvements in technology which the Hong Kong board aims at utilising to make the league distinct from the rest. CHK Director Jonathan Cummings said that people in Hong Kong are very happy to have the tournament back on the calendar. It enjoyed immense popularity in 2012 and was talked about by major cricket playing countries.

“We love what the Sixes were and are passionate about bringing the best bits with us, but we won’t be satisfied putting on the same show as in 2012.” said the director. “This will be the Sixes 2.0 and over time, we want to make this the most hi-tech, innovative cricket tournament in the world. The emergence of Twenty20 leagues around the world is great, but this is an opportunity to create a different a experience for cricket lovers and to engage new fans to the sport,” he continued.

Big hits and entertainment assured

Since the tournament does not follow most of the traditional rules of cricket, it enjoys the benefit of making the league more interesting and entertaining with its own ideas. They are also aiming to overshadow the total number of online views received by Hong Kong T20 Blitz in March this year.

“Anyone can enjoy Sixes cricket, lots of big hits and great entertainment with no breaks, so you don’t need to have grown up loving the game to enjoy it. It has a role to play within the region in promoting the sport,” Jonathan explained.
