The IPL is a platform where young talent is nurtured who can go on to represent their country at the national level. Wrist spinners have become an integral part of all teams as they have the capability of picking wickets at any stage of the match. The IPL Auction 2018 saw teams spending big bucks for wrist spinners. Sandeep Lamichhane, the 17-year old leggie became the first cricketer from Nepal to bag an IPL contract.

In the Spotlight

Sandeep’s name popped up again when he became the first player from Nepal to be picked up for the Caribbean Premier League Twenty20 tournament. The leggie signed up for St Kitts and Nevis Patriots during the CPL auction in London for a fee of $5,000. This is a huge boost for players from associate nations who now know that they are just a few performances away from earning domestic T20 contracts.

Lamichhane made his unofficial senior team debut back in 2015 at the age of 15. He faced a touring MCC squad and impressed his opponents. He was then invited to ply his trade in Hong Kong where he met the former Australian captain Michael Clarke. The Aussie legend recognized Sandeep’s talent and invited him to spend the following Australian summer playing club cricket in Sydney.

Lamichhane’s first foray on the international stage came at the 2016 Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh. The leggie bagged 14 wickets including a five-year in just six games. He made his senior-team debut against Namibia in the WCL Championship and was a regular throughout the rest of the tournament. The young spinner is known for his accuracy and has a good control over the ball. He must make the most of the few opportunities that come his way as players’ seldom get such big opportunities at such a tender age.

The sixth edition of the Caribbean Premier League is set to be held from August 8 to September 16.
