Indian selectors yesterday announced the squad for the 3-match T20I series against West Indies as well as for the tour of Australia. The big decision was the exclusion of MS Dhoni as the Indian wicketkeeper-batsman was not named in the squad for both the series. Dhoni, who only plays the limited-overs format has of late struggled with his batting form thus not only adding pressure on himself but the team as well.

Many believed this as the bold move by the selectors to give the veteran an indication of his possible prospects with the team. He might be overlooked from the T20I team in the future as well for roping in some young talent. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra reckons this as a big news in terms of selection of the limited-overs team. Dhoni has who has been the indispensable part of the Indian team in the white-ball cricket has already expressed his desire to represent the Men in Blue until the World Cup next year.

He might not play T20Is again

Aakash, who has been following the game from close quarters, questioned for curtains being raised over Dhoni’s career in the T20I format. Only minutes after the teams were announced, he took to Twitter to talked about the intrigued selection. He wrote, ” Even the Indian T20i team for #AusvInd announced. 17 members. Big NEWS is that Dhoni is NOT in that team too. Might not see Dhoni in India colours for the T20 format again… #AusvInd “.

Looking for the second wicketkeeper

However, the selectors gave a rationale behind Dhoni’s exclusion from both the squads. Chief selector MSK Prasad was of the opinion that it doesn’t rule Dhoni out of contention for a spot in the T20I side in the future. He believed that the team wants to try others as they look for another wicketkeeper and groom him before Dhoni bids adieu to the game.

“The T20Is here and in Australia, he [Dhoni] is not going to play, because we are also looking at a second wicketkeeper. That will be between Rishabh and Dinesh Karthik. So they will be getting a chance to keep and bat,” Prasad had said.
