India’s Test vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane is in the middle of a sweet phase of his life – both on and off the field. While he has been scoring runs of late in the long format, he has also been blessed with a baby girl recently. The ace middle-order batsman took a brief break from the game after India’s one-sided 3-0 win over South Africa in a recent Test series and is back to training to prepare for the next series which is against a visiting Bangladesh side.

Rahane, whose temperament came under scrutiny a number of times recently despite a sound technique, was overlooked for India’s World Cup squad. He has not featured in India’s limited-over assignments for over a year now but came back strongly in the Tests since the West Indies series.

He hit a century and two fifties in the four innings that he played in the Caribbeans. And then in the SA series at home, he scored a fifty followed by a hundred in Ranchi. His 267-run partnership with double centurion Rohit Sharma in the third Test match turned it in India’s favour.

The Mumbai batsman, who once used to be seen as Rahul Dravid’s successor in the Indian team, is now looking to continue with the momentum against Bangladesh. The 31-year-old took to Twitter on Monday where he posted a video showing him training. He captioned it saying: “After spending some quality time with the family, it’s time to get back at the office.”

Ajinkya Rahane is 25 runs short of making 4,000 Test runs

Rahane scored 271 runs in four innings against the West Indies and then 216 against the Proteas. Rahane averages 43 plus in 61 Test matches and is just 25 runs short of completing 4,000 runs as the 15th Indian batsman. Murali Vijay has 3,982 runs at the moment but he is not in the picture at the moment to play Test cricket and Rahane looks set to overtake him to the 16th highest scorer for the country in the long format.

Bangladesh will be playing three T20Is between November 3 and 10 while the first Test will take place in Indore from November 14.
