It has been all Ben Stokes ever since he helped England get over the line on a crazy Sunday afternoon at Headingley. His unbeaten 135 is being touted one of the best Test knocks on par with Kusal Perera’s 153* earlier this year in Durban against South Africa. But like Vishwa Fernando did in the rainbow nation for Sri Lanka, England’s no 11 Jack Leach also gutsed it out facing 17 balls for his one run which eventually tied the scores.

Leach opened the innings for England as a nightwatchman against Ireland only last month and had scored 92 runs. It was clear when he came out to bat that the left-hander won’t gift his wicket away and Australia had to earn it. With 76 runs in the kitty, the visitors were the clear favourites to retain the Ashes with an easy win.

However, Stokes had other ideas. He farmed more strike and played some outrageous strokes including the scoop shot and the switch-hit which went for six. But whenever Leach got the strike for one or two balls or at times even for an over, he didn’t give his wicket. Australia threw everything possible they had at him, but England’s number 11 was rock solid with his defence.

The single which tied the scores

With two runs needed, Ben Stokes tried more than once to finish the game in Nathan Lyon’s over. In the process, Jack Leach was almost run-out as well only for Lyon to miss a huge chance. Stokes couldn’t finish the game and also failed to take a single off the last ball of the over which meant Leach had to face Cummins for a full over with England still needing two runs to win.

In front of the World’s number 1 Test bowler, Jack Leach had his task cut out. The plan was clear from Australia. They were going to bounce him out. The first two balls saw Leach playing the bouncers uncomfortably. But the third ball didn’t rise big and he managed to successfully jab it to the leg-side for a single which got the biggest of cheers from the crowd.

Jack Leach had also got off the mark as the scores were tied. No wonder, it is being touted as the greatest ever single he’d ever taken as England successfully managed to overhaul the target off the very next delivery. The celebrations followed after an amazing win and later at 8 PM, Jack Leach was hilariously seen demonstrating the shot which earned him the most important run of his career.
