VVS Laxman, the former Indian cricketer, reckons that MS Dhoni hasn’t run out of gas even having not played a lot in the last few months. Dhoni, who will be turning 39 this July, was last seen in the 2019 World Cup semi-final and went to a sabbatical from there on. He was set to return in the Indian Premier League (IPL), but that has now been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Hyderabad-born Laxman feels that Dhoni doesn’t lack in fitness by any means and playing for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will keep him in the thick of things. Dhoni had also attended a few practice sessions by the CSK, which also had to be shelved due to the coronavirus outbreak. The 45-year-old Laxman also lauded Dhoni for being ‘astute’ in his leadership.

MS Dhoni been very successful doing that, says Laxman

“I think, playing for CSK will keep him going because he’s supremely fit and age is just a number, and especially when someone like MS Dhoni is not only physically fit, but mentally very astute as a captain as a leader he enjoys leading the CSK franchise,”  Laxman was quoted as saying on Star Sports’ Cricket Connected show.

Laxman has also backed him to play not one, but in the next couple of seasons in the IPL. “Not only this IPL, he will probably play in the next couple of IPLs, and then we will take a call about his future as a cricketer. He’s been very successful doing that and as far as Dhoni’s cricket is concerned, I’m sure you’re looking forward to watching him play in the IPL,” he added.

Ever since Dhoni went on a break, there have been constant talks of when he will be hanging his boots from cricket at the highest level. A number of pundits have had their say on the matter. Even his parents and childhood coach shared their opinions on Dhoni.

He is also said to be in contention for the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year. Since the World Cup, India have been grooming the likes of Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson for the keeper’s role. Even KL Rahul hasn’t flattered to deceive in the same role.
