Aiden Markram has been touted as one among South Africa’s brightest cricketing talents. In a really brief career, the Proteas cricketer has already made a name for himself as a dependable batsman. In 10 Tests, the 22-year has racked up 1000 runs under his belt along with four centuries and three fifties. He made his way into international cricket as a top-order batsman and hasn’t disappointed by any means.

Quite deservingly, he was named as the Newcomer of the Year at the Cricket South Africa (CSA) awards ceremony at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. He is currently ranked number nine in the ICC Test Rankings for batsmen. Following the award ceremony, Markram was asked about taking the responsibility of batting at number four and he mentioned that it is a possibility going forward.

It isn’t a case of trying to find the next AB

“It’s a little bit foreign to me, having opened for most of my life, but there have been a few white ball games with the Titans and in the Indian series where I have batted at No 4. It’s a little bit different, but at the end of the day, it’s the ball and the situation you’ve got to play. If I ever got given that opportunity I would take it with open arms,” Markram was quoted as saying by Sport24.

The cricketing world got a massive shock when AB de Villiers decided to bid adieu to all forms of international cricket. The stalwart’s sudden decision has left a massive void in the middle-order and someone needs to put their hands up and fill in the position if not fill in his massive boots.

“I don’t think it’s a case of trying to find the next AB de Villiers because we will never manage to find another player like that. It’s still quite important that whoever does fill that role makes it their own and plays their own game in that role. Whether you get the job done like AB does or whoever … as long as the job gets done,” the Centurion-born cricketer added.
