England’s assistant coach Paul Farbrace said that the England opener deserved the fine he has got for breaching ICC Code of Conduct. Alex Hales was found to have breached Article 2.1.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match”.

The incident happened when he was caught by Yasir Shah off the bowling of Mohammad Amir and the third umpire was asked to confirm if the catch was clean. There was no clear view available and he was given out. Following the dismissal, he visited the third umpire’s room and questioned the decision.

Farbrace admitted that it was a mistake from Hales and said that he quite rightly deserves the fine. “He deserves his fine,” Farbrace said. “You can’t go into the match referee’s office during a game and have heated exchange as Alex did. He deserves to be fined. We can’t support any player going in and having a crack at the third umpire. However frustrated he might be, it is the wrong thing to do. The ICC have done the right thing today.”

However, by the end of the day’s play, Hales admitted the mistake and thus there was no formal hearing done by the Match referee rather was sanctioned a fine of 15 percent of his match fees.

“Going into the match referee’s office was the wrong thing to do. We would not have advised him to go and share his thoughts. It was not the brightest thing to do and it wasn’t going to make any difference. And mid-game, it’s not the best thing to upset umpires. You work very hard on having a good relationship with umpires,” he concluded.
