Allan Donald likely to be roped in as bowling coach for Australia

Former South African fast bowler Allan Donald is most likely to join the Australian team as their bowling coach for Australia’s tour to Sri Lanka starting in July.

The cricket.com.au reported that Donald might fill in the bowling coach’s seat instead of Craig McDermott, whose contract got over after the World T20 in India. The Australian team is scheduled to tour Sri Lanka for 3 Tests, 5 ODIs, and 2 T20Is. Reports in News Limited also suggest that Donald might even continue with the team after the Sri Lankan tour, and stay with them for a one-day series in South Africa in September and potentially even the crucial three-Test series against the Proteas which begins in Perth in November.

However, there has been no confirmation from the Cricket Australia yet. Though CA have previously stated they are working through coaching appointments for the Sri Lankan tour and any announcements will be made in “due course”.

Australia are not expected to name a full-time replacement for McDermott until the 2016-17 home summer as per the head coach Darren Lehmann. “We’ll try and get someone in place by the start of the summer and we’ll be fine,” quoted Lehmann.

Allan Donald had an illustrious career as a player with 330 Test wickets to his name. He has a good experience with coaching too. Donald started his coaching career way back in 2007 when he joined the English side as a temporary bowling coach. He went on to coach the national sides of New Zealand and even South Africa. In the County Championships, he coached the Warwickshire team. The White Lightning is currently the bowling coach of the IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore. Previously, he had coached the Pune Warriors India in the IPL.
