South African legend Allan Donald took a dig at Sri Lanka after Zimbabwe registered a facile victory in the first ODI at Galle. Failing to defend a huge total on the board, the Sri Lankan cricket team is in the news for the wrong reasons for two games on the trot, after a shambolic fielding display against Pakistan in Champions Trophy denied them a place in the knock-outs.

Their head coach Graham Ford‘s shocking exit from his duties stunned the cricketing world after the former South African cricketer had an apparent conflict with team manager Asanka Gurusinha. After the humiliation at Galle on Friday, Donald questioned if Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will next sack the interim coach as well.

“Great start to the series from Zimbabwe beating Sri Lanka at a canter today. What next..Sack the interim coach next I guess??” read the white lightning’s tweet. This embodies how SLC is going about their business and failing to reap any benefits. SLC President Sumathipala recently said in an interview that they are in talks with 4 coaches (unnamed) and will announce a new head coach before India arrives in the Island in July.

A forgettable day for the Lankans

Going through one of its most traumatic phases in their cricketing history, the Lankan Lions’ playing standard is, unfortunately, diminishing with every passing day. Sri Lanka entered this first ODI against the Zimbabweans without a proper head coach and they looked awful, especially with the ball in hand.

Batting first, they compiled a mammoth 316 on the board and no one ever chased so many runs at Galle previously. But records were about to get shattered as Solomon Mire’s breathtaking century, well supported by Sean Williams, Sikandar Raza and Malcolm Waller, propelled Zimbabwe to condense the huge total with 14 balls to spare.

Zimbabweans are often praised for the spirit that they show despite so many predicaments surrounding them. This win will be a huge boost for their cricketers and will inspire them to go all out on the Lankans and register an unforgettable series win.
