The former Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews is likely to be fit for the upcoming ODI tri-series in Bangladesh starting on January 15. Zimbabwe is the third team involved in the series as the island nation will play their opening game on 17th of the same month. The all-rounder was injured during the second T20 International against India in December and was in danger of missing out on the upcoming matches. However, the news should come as a huge relief for Sri Lanka who are already struggling in the format.
Sri Lanka had a forgettable 2017 as they lost a maximum of their matches across formats. Only shining light during all the lows was the 2-0 Test series victory over Pakistan in the UAE. But their form in the limited overs format has been extremely poor and also the dearth of captains in the side is also hurting them. Mathews resigned from the helm after their shocking series loss to Zimbabwe at home but the likes of Upula Tharanga and Thisara Perera have not been able to change the fortunes of the team as the leader.
Mathews to lead Sri Lanka again?
The news of Angelo Mathews getting fit in time for the tri-series in Bangladesh was confirmed by Island cricket. Also, according to their reliable sources, he will be appointed the captain once again. Sri Lankan team is in transition forever since the retirements of the stalwarts Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. The youngsters have failed to step up to the challenge at the highest level and the frequent injuries to their talisman Mathews has also not helped their cause.
It would be interesting to see if he agrees to take over the mantle once again. Sri Lanka will play their first match against Zimbabwe and would want to brush aside the shocking series loss at home against them. Every team will face the other twice before the top two will meet in the final for the ultimate glory. All the matches are scheduled to be played at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka. Sri Lanka will also play 2 Tests and 2 T20Is against the home side post the conclusion of tri-series.
