Sri Lankan cricket has been taken by a shock after their shameful series loss against Zimbabwe. Sri Lanka was ranked 8th in the ICC ODI rankings before the series and skipper Angelo Mathews hoped for a 5-0 whitewash in order to revive their rank.

But it went all wrong for the captain as his team found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-2 defeat. Following the loss, a dejected Angelo Mathews has decided to think about his future as a captain. Considering the fact that Zimbabwe cricket was in turmoil before the series, the loss to them is unacceptable according to Mathews. Mathews stated that this has been the worst moment in his tenure as the Sri Lankan captain.

A tremendous all-round display from Sikandar Raza sank the Sri Lankan ship in the final ODI which marked their first ODI series victory against the Lions. Zimbabwe was ranked 11th in the ICC rankings before the series and was defeated by Scotland, Netherlands and Afghanistan in recent times. So the series victory against Sri Lanka was a moment of pride for the men in red while for the Lankans, it was a series to forget.

“It’s one of the lowest points in my career, and a hard one to swallow,” Mathews said after the 3-2 series defeat. “Everything went against us, from the toss to misreading the wicket. But there are no excuses. At the end of the day we were not good enough to beat them. They played better cricket.”

Sri Lanka has been going through a rough patch as far as One Day Internals are concerned since the 2015 World Cup. While South Africa, England and Australia handed them series defeats, they drew against Bangladesh at home. To pile on the misery they could not make it out of the group stages in the recently concluded Champions Trophy as well.

What Mathews had to say:

“Still haven’t thought about stepping down,” Mathews said. “There’s time. I’ll give it a bit more thought and talk to the selectors. I haven’t decided anything yet.

“We have not been consistent. The pressure is on all of us. The more we lose, the more pressure we are under. There is no solution for that and the only solution is winning. We try to win games, but we commit too many mistakes.”

Sri Lankan has an India series lined up in the coming days and there is a lot of improvement that’s is needed.

“We have an India series coming up, but before that, we have the test against Zimbabwe to talk about,” Mathews said. “The Indian series will be even tougher.

“In a small period, we have to fix our problems. As a team, we did do the training, but nothing is working in the middle.” signed off Mathews.
