Known as ‘Mr. Cricket’, Australia’s Michael Hussey has always come across as someone who has the highest regards for the game and played the game with utmost integrity. 42-year old former Australian is currently in India as the expert commentator for TNPL, he was asked about the first thing he looks in a youngster, Hussey said ‘character is the first thing followed by talent’.
Hussey has represented the Baggy green in 79 Test matches and scored 6235 runs at an average of 51.52. He has scored 19 centuries and 29 half-centuries. In ODI’s, the middle-order batsman has 5442 runs at an average of 48.15, including 3 hundreds and 39 fifties.
He also spoke about the controversial relation between former team India coach Anil Kumble and Virat Kohli, as Kumble stepped down from his position after a rumored rift with the skipper. Hussey believes that Kumble did the right thing as it is very important for both the captain and the coach to be on the same page and have an understanding.
“Anil must have done many honorable things as a coach. But unless you were in the inner sanctum of the Indian team, you would not know what the differences between them were.” He said as quoted by The Hindu.
“The rapport between the coach and the captain is vital and Anil did the honorable thing by leaving.” Talking about Kohli’s captaincy, he said, “I have really enjoyed Kohli’s captaincy. He really sets high standards. M.S. Dhoni, too, had his successes but they are different personalities.”
Challenging for CSK
With CSK back in the IPL, Hussey said that he will be happy to play a part with a short term stint, but is not ready to sign a long term contract with any international commitments, as he wants to stay near to his family. He also added that it won’t be easy for CSK and therefore the upcoming IPL will be a huge challenge for them.
