BCCI recently announced that Anil Kumble’s new contract would be framed shortly after the end of upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in England and Wales. Kumble took over as the head coach of the Indian cricket team prior to the commencement of their successful tour to the West Indies as they won the series 2-0. Since then, India completed their triumphant grand home season.
India completed the New Zealand series with a 3-0 whitewash. England also suffered defeat in the hands of the Indian side with a humiliating 4-0 defeat on Indian turf. In between these Test series, India also led a successful one-day campaign as they defeated the Kiwis by a 3-2 margin in the five-match series.
India also defeated England both in one-day and T20Is by a margin of 2-1 respectively in the three-match series. However, the real test for Kumble and co. started when Australians landed to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy. The Indian spin legend and his team showed a lot of character to win the series 2-1, battling injury and tough end of season pitches,
In 17 Test matches last season, Kumble and Kohli managed to win 12 of them. Looking at his successful run in the Indian dressing room, BCCI decided to extend the contract of current Indian head coach.
“Yes, Anil Kumble’s contract as the chief coach will end with India’s campaign in the Champions Trophy. Obviously, there is every possibility that it will be up for renewal but that will only be decided by the general body after the tournament gets over,” revealed a BCCI executive according to PTI.
Apart from being the head coach of the Indian cricket team, Kumble was also held responsible for the task of making a presentation to the COA.
“Till the time COA is in charge of BCCI functioning, every matter will need its approval. Whatever decision is taken regarding Anil Kumble, it will be have to be cleared by the COA,” added the official.
