Anil Kumble quits as Mumbai Indians team Mentor: The Mumbai Indians think-tank that boasted of many legends of the game like Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Anil Kumble, Shane Bond, Jonty Rhodes and Robin Singh, will not be the same team anymore. Their Mentor, Anil Kumble has stepped down as the Chief Mentor of the franchise team in the Indian Premier League with immediate effect.
The former Indian bowler who had 619 Test wickets under his name was a part of the Mumbai Indians team since the 2013 edition of the IPL. “I sign off with the obvious satisfaction of moulding a set of brilliant individuals to a high performing unit. Over the 3 years, MI met unprecedented success winning the IPL twice & the Champions League once. Winning both trophies in the same year (2013) being our crowning glory,” was the statement given by Kumble on November 30, 2015.
Under his mentorship, MI won the IPL in 2013 beating the Chennai Super Kings. They also won the Champions League T20 in the same year under his guidance. Mumbai reached the semi-finals stage in the 2014 edition of IPL. Mumbai Indians were crowned the IPL Champions for the second time this year. Kumble will certainly walk out as a proud mentor of the team.
“As I move on to pursue other interests around cricket, I shall be amiss if I do not express my deep sense of appreciation to the Ambani family,” he added.
Kumble recently started his own cricket academy under the name Tenwic and might well be associated with the same now. The franchisee Mumbai Indians confirmed the news of Kumble’s departure, expressing their deep gratitude towards India’s highest wicket-taker in both Tests and ODIs.
“Anil Kumble is a legend and we thank him for all that he has done for Mumbai Indians. I have personally learnt a great deal from him and will continue to seek his wise counsel and guidance,” said the Indian Premier League franchise’s co-owner, Akash Ambani.
