Anurag Thakur, the current secretary of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is now all set to take the post of the BCCI President following the resignation of Shashank Manohar from the post. Thakur is all set to be unanimously elected as the BCCI president in the Board’s Special General Meeting (SGM), which will be held tomorrow.

It is the turn of the East Zone to propose a name for the post and Thakur is the forerunner to be tipped in by the members of East Zone. Anurag Thakur is a Member of Parliament (MP) from BJP and has full support from the members of East Zone which include West Bengal, Jharkhand, Tripura and the National Cricket Club (NCC).

The post of BCCI President was previously held by Shashank Manohar, who stepped down from the post in mid-May after his 8-month long tenure at the post. Manohar then contested the first-ever ICC independent Presidential elections and won unopposed, following which he took over as the ICC President.

If Thakur gets elected as the new BCCI President, he will then have the duty to appoint the next BCCI Secretary, the post that he currently holds. As per the reports in the media, Maharashtra Cricket Association Chief Ajay Shirke is the top contender to take over the post. However, Shirke has cleared that he has no intentions of holding a post in the BCCI and has not put forth his name for the post.

Anurag Thakur will be taking over the presidential reins, if elected, at a time when BCCI is facing severe reforms and suggestions from the country’s apex court, the Supreme Court. The Lodha Committee is constantly suggesting reforms and the recommendations for bringing a change in the board’s functionalities. It will be interesting to see how the 41-year old handles the new post.
