Ashes 2021-22: Australia confirm 15-member squad for first two Tests, Alex Carey to debut

The Australian side has announced its final 15-member squad for the 1st and 2nd Ashes Test matches against England. And, it has been confirmed that wicketkeeper-batsman Alex Carey will be making his Test debut for the kangaroos.

The Chairman of Selectors of the Australian side, George Bailey said that Carey has now been a regular part of the Australian limited-overs setup, and even labelled the left-hander as an excellent cricketer.

Adding that Carey will bring in a lot of strengths to the Australian side, Bailey added that Carey will be the 461st player to wear the Baggy Green for the Australian side.

“Alex has been a regular member of the national side in white-ball cricket, particularly in the one-day game. He is an excellent cricketer and a fine individual who will bring many great strengths into the team. He will be a very deserved holder of baggy green cap number 461,” said Bailey as quoted by the official website of the ICC.

Alex Carey, on his part said that he is humbled by the opportunity provided to him and added that he is excited for the massive series coming up against the England side. Carey further added that his main focus is now on helping Australia secure The Ashes, and concluded by stating that he will do his best to make Australia proud.

“I am incredibly humbled by this opportunity. It’s an exciting build-up for what is a huge series ahead. My focus is on preparing and playing my part in helping Australia secure the Ashes. I will be doing my absolute best to make them and our country proud,” concluded Alex Carey.

The 1st Test is scheduled to commence on 8th December 2021. The previous Ashes series between England and Australia ended in a 2-2 draw.
