Ever since the news broke that the International Cricket Council is mulling over making four-day Tests mandatory from the next cycle of the ICC Test Championship which starts from 2023, world cricket has been divided into two corners.

The reasons as to why ICC mulling over staging four-day Tests are the financial costs involved at staging the fifth day of the Test match plus the fact that getting rid of the last day would free up the already congested cricket calendar in the wake of the rising proliferation of the franchise-based T20 Tournaments around the world.

The issue is set to be discussed in the upcoming International Cricket Council (ICC) meeting in March, but that not stopped former as well as current cricketers to voice their opinion against the proposal. Former Indian cricketers Ashish Nehra and Yuvraj Singh too joined the bandwagon on Thursday.

“To be very honest, unless the ICC is in the mind to want to prepare rank turners or seaming wickets, it is different. Again I’ll say it is not a great idea. When it comes to Test cricket, you know some things you shouldn’t change or touch too much, because you see, so many times the result comes on day number five.

So I’ll be happy to have the same old five-day Test match,” Ashish Nehra said as quoted by Sportstar. Yuvraj also echoed Nehra’s opinion when he said “I agree with what Nehra just said,”

MCC not in favour of four-day Tests

Earlier the Marylebone Cricket Club [MCC] had also thrown their weight behind the concept of five-day Test cricket. “MCC has noted the recent discussion regarding the future of Test cricket and the ICC’s desire to debate the introduction of four-day Test cricket to replace the current five-day format in the World Test Championship from 2023.

“The MCC Cricket committee and MCC World Cricket committee has recently discussed the issue and although they can see some benefits that four-day Test cricket could bring, both committees believe that Test cricket should continue to be played over five days,” MCC said in a statement as quoted by Hindustan Times.

For the uninitiated, there have been two four-day Tests played. The first one was played between South Africa and Zimbabwe while the last one was played between England and Ireland last summer.
