Mumbai Cricket Association nominated its vice president Ashish Shelar to fill up the president’s post left vacant by Sharad Pawar after he stepped down from the post almost a month ago. Shelar will fill the post as its interim chief. “We have today filled up the posts which have become vacant. Mr Ashish Shelar has been made the interim president of the Mumbai Cricket Association as Mr Sharad Pawar has resigned,” MCA’s joint secretary Umesh Khanvilkar was quoted as saying by the Indian Express after a meeting of the association’s managing committee.

Pawar had specified that his ineligibility to continue as a President because he had crossed the age of 70, according to the orders laid down by the Supreme Court in its order based on the Lodha committee recommendations. He quit his job on 17th December. Following BJP chief Shelar’s rise to the helm and the two other vice president’s post lying vacant after the resignation of Dilip Vengsarkar, two near vice presidents were nominated, said Khanvilkar.

“Mr Pankaj Thakur and Mr Vinod Deshpande (both managing committee members) are the two new vice presidents,” said the MCA joint secretary.

“All these posts will be there until our next elections. We had to take these decisions and forward the same to the BCCI,” said Khanvilkar.

Khanvilkar further stated that the constitution committee of MCA is in line to redraft the old constitution to obey with the Lodha Committee’s recommendations which have been upheld by the apex court of the country. “The process is already on. We will change the constitution once the constitution committee completes its task and a meeting (Special General Meeting) is convened,” he added.

The ruling also meant that the recommendations laid down by the Lodha Committee of the age cap of 70 and tenure cap of 9 on administrators came into effect. This has not been the first across boards in the country.
