The opening match of Asia Cup 2018 between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka turned out to be a one-sided encounter as the Tigers annihilated the Lankans by 137 runs at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Mushfiqur Rahim’s herculean efforts followed by an immaculate display of line and length by the bowlers helped Bangladesh comprehensively come out trumps.

Mushfiqur steals the show

After Mashrafe Mortaza won the toss and elected to bat first, Lasith Malinga picked up Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan to push Bangladesh on the backfoot. Thereafter, Tamim Iqbal got his wrist injured and walked off subsequently. Thereafter, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mohammad Mithun put their heads down and built a much-needed 131-run partnership, which was broken by Malinga.

The Tigers lost wickets at regular intervals, but Mushfiqur employed a calm approach and stay put in his wicket. The 31-year-old eventually notched his sixth ODI ton and went on to score 144 runs from 150 deliveries. In the meantime, Tamim came out to bat with one hand and the approach attracted appreciations for him. Bangladesh eventually managed 261 runs.

Bangladesh maul their opponents

Upul Tharanga got them off to a blistering start, however, Mustafizur Rahman picked up Kusal Mendis to give the Tigers their first breakthrough. Mortaza picked up Tharanga in the very next over to push Lanka on the backfoot. The match went downhill for Mathews’ men thereafter as wickets went down like nine pins. Thisara Perera and Dasun Shanaka tried hard, but couldn’t carry on.

In the 26th over, Sri Lanka found themselves at 96/8 with 166 runs required in the second half of their run chase. Mehidy Hasan Miraz also chipped in with a couple of wickets. The lower, consisting of Suranga Lakmal, Dilruwan Perera and Amila Aponso stayed in the middle and went through the motions until the time when Bangladesh pulled the curtains down on the match.
