The Asia Cup 2022 is set to commence in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on August 27, Saturday, and the opening game will be played between Afghanistan and Sri Lanka at Dubai International Cricket Stadium. This will be the 15th edition of the competition, and for the second time after the 2016 edition, the T20 format will be used.
Six teams, divided into two groups, will participate in the tournament. Hong Kong, India and Pakistan are in Group A, while Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are in Group B. The top two teams from both groups will qualify for Super 4. And the top two teams from Super 4 will make the final, which will be played on September 11.

Afghanistan and Sri Lanka faced have each other only once in the T20Is, which was on March 17, 2016, in Kolkata. Sri Lanka went on to win the match by six wickets, chasing a target of 154. In the Asia Cup, they have already faced each other two times, and Sri Lanka won the first meeting in 2014 by 129 runs, and Afghanistan won the second in 2018 by 91 runs. Overall, the two teams have faced five times across formats, and Sri Lanka lead by 4-1.
