India will mark their debut in the ICC ODI Super League as they take on the hosts Australia in a 3-match ODI series slated to be played in Sydney and Canberra. India, being the hosts of the next Men’s ODI WC, will be getting a direct qualification to the tournament but will be looking to strengthen the holes in the line-up ahead of the event. They will be taking part in the ODI series starting on November 27th in the absence of Rohit Sharma, the No.2 ODI batsman. India’s 2-month long tour of Australia will also mark their return to International cricket after a gap of nine months.
Here are all the key stats and numbers that matter ahead of the AUS vs IND ODI series starting on November 27th:
0 – India won none of the four ODI matches they played since the beginning of 2018 without Rohit Sharma in the playing XI. India tied with Afghanistan during the 2018 Asia Cup match when Rohit took rest and got whitewashed in the 3-match ODI series against New Zealand at the start of the year when Sharma was ruled out due to an injury.
1.833 – Virat Kohli’s win-loss ratio as captain in the ODI format against Australia is the 2nd best for any captain who has led his teams against the Aussies in at least ten ODIs. India won 11 out of the 17 ODIs played under Kohli against Australia and lost in six games. Clive Lloyd has a win-loss ratio of 2.833 having won 21 ODIs against the Aussies as captain and lost only nine.
2/2 – India’s highest ODI totals against Australia in Australia have been recorded in Sydney and Canberra which are the venues for the 3-match ODI series. India made 331/4 in Sydney during the 2016 season during a successful chase and were bundled out for 323 in Canberra also while chasing during the same tour.
3 – India lost each of their last three ODI matches as they were whitewashed in the 3-match ODI series against New Zealand at the start of the year. The Indian team has lost more than three ODIs in succession only once since the start of 2007. India lost five ODIs in a row during the 2015-16 season where they lost each of the first four matches in the Australia tour after losing series decider at home against South Africa.
5 – Indian team is currently on a streak of losing five consecutive International matches as they lost all the three ODIs and two Tests they played in the tour of New Zealand at the start of the year. India has not lost more than five consecutive International matches in the last 16 years. They lost seven successive games played in International cricket during the 2002-03 season which includes six defeats in New Zealand tour.
12 – Mitchell Starc has picked up 12 wickets across six AUS vs IND ODIs at home with help of a 6-wicket haul. However, the left-arm pacer has only four wickets to his name across the five ODIs he played outside Australia against India.
25.2 – Yuzvendra Chahal has a bowling strike rate of 25.2 in the ODI format against Australia having picked up 15 wickets across seven ODI matches against them. Chahal bagged a 6-wicket haul in his only ODI appearance on Australian soil (MCG, 2019).
66.71 – Steve Smith has a batting average of 66.71 at home during the AUS vs IND ODIs as he scored 467 runs across seven innings with help of two centuries and a fifty. In overall, Smith has scored 907 runs in 15 ODI innings against India at an average of 60.46 with three tons and five fifties.
268 – The beginning of the ODI series will end India’s 268-day stay without being on the field in International cricket. (2nd March 2020 during a Test in New Zealand) This is now the longest break from International cricket for Indian Men’s team in nearly 29 years.
The last instance of India serving a longer break in International cricket than the current one was was of 285 days in 1991 where they played their first match of the year on January 4th and the next on October 18th.
2008 – 2008 was the only calendar year where Virat Kohli failed to score a century in the ODI format. Kohli scored 258 runs across six ODIs in 2020 with help of three fifties and has got only three more games in the ODI format to play this year. Before 2020, Kohli has scored at least three or more ODI tons in all calendar years except for 2008 (0), 2009 (1) and 2015 (2).
