Australia in talks with India to host Day-Night Test matches in 2020

Australia could start their Test summer campaign next year by hosting Afghanistan at Brisbane ahead of locking horns with India. Virat Kohli and Co are scheduled to be hosted in Adelaide and Perth in the first two matches as part of the traditional Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

After India embraced the pink-ball D/N Test against Bangladesh on Friday, Cricket Australia is also in talks with BCCI to include at least one D/N Test in the series. It will be interesting to see how BCCI, under the new presidency of Sourav Ganguly, will comprehend Cricket Australia’s tour schedule preferences.

“If the Test summer proper did start that way, it’s a possibility, but there’s a lot to work through,” CEO Kevin Roberts told SEN Radio as quoted ESPNCricinfo. “We don’t have any preconceived ideas on that, we’re in the middle of executing the season, making sure we can deliver a really good experience to fans at the ground and through our broadcasters, and then we’ll get on to planning next season. We’re really keen on making sure we can learn from each season before we approach the next one.”

Australia would prefer to set the ball rolling against India at Gabba, a venue where the hosts have been invincibles for 31 years. However, India have played only one Test at Gabba since 2003. The power shift and dominance have certainly shifted since the last decade. Virat Kohli and his troops, who are currently the top-ranked team in Test cricket, will be eager to carry their sublime form on the foreign soil too. India are comfortably sitting on the top of the World Test Championship table with 300 points. Touted to be the favourites to win the tournament, it will be interesting to see how the visitors fare against a formidable Australian pace-attack.

Roberts seemed optimistic about the future of D/N Test cricket. He also stated that India will gain vital experience and confidence of day-night Test cricket after their inaugural D/N encounter against Bangladesh.

“We’re having productive conversations with India about the prospect of us playing day-night tests against each other in the future. Let’s hope this week’s experience in Kolkata is a really powerful one for them and a good experience that gives them more confidence about more day-night Test cricket to keep going forward,” said Roberts.
