Australia were scheduled to host Bangladesh for two Tests and three One-Day Internationals in August and September as per the ICC Future Tour Programme. However, Cricket Australia backed away, citing financial issues as a reason for the move. Moreover, they also mentioned that the time isn’t appropriate for a full-fledged series as the football season in the country will be underway during the time.

Also, the broadcasters were hesitant to air the Test and ODI series during the football fever in the country and the CA mentioned the cricket-affair as a commercially non-viable one. Nevertheless, they have invited Bangladesh for a T20I series later this year in order for preparations surrounding the 2020 World T20.

A mutual agreement

A CA official mentioned that the choice has been made by the consensus of both the cricket boards. “The window allocated in the ICC FTP for Bangladesh to tour Australia in August this year has been postponed, by mutual agreement by both Cricket Australia and the Bangladesh Cricket Board. Both countries agreed to postponing that tour to be better aligned ahead of the ICC World T20 in 2020 in Australia,” the spokesperson was quoted as saying in Hindustan Times.

Bangladesh haven’t toured down under ever since 2003 and the postponement of the series will only mean that they have to wait longer for the same to take place. Meanwhile, there won’t be any shortage of cricket for both the nations. Australia will tour England for a five-match ODI series followed by a one-off T20I series at Birmingham.

Thereafter, they will take part in a T20 tri-series in Zimbabwe, involving the hosts and Pakistan. Meanwhile, Bangladesh will be pitted against Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series against Afghanistan in Dehradun which will be staged in June.
