Australia might be struggling to find their right playing XI for the first Test against India starting in Adelaide on December 6 but they have taken a move which has beaten all records of humanity already. The hosts have called up a six-year-old boy from Barossa near Adelaide named Archie Schiller for the Adelaide match and the call was made by none other than the Baggy Green’s head coach, Justin Langer.
Archie has a faulty heart condition and in his short life so far, he has already undergone several surgeries and needs to be kept under constant supervision to lead a stable life. The cricket-loving kid idolises former spin wizard Shane Warne and he got the gift of his life when Langer made a video call to let him know about his inclusion in the squad for the first Test against India. The call was facilitated by the Make-a-Wish Foundation, an NGO.
Archie was only three months old when his heart ailment was diagnosed and he underwent an urgent surgery that lasted for over seven hours. Six months later, he had to undergo yet another surgery to get his heart’s faulty valves fixed. In December last year, the boy had his third open-heart surgery and his family wasn’t sure it would return with Archie.
Make-A-Wish came to know about Archie’s health conditions and also his ambitions and helped him to become a part of the Australian squad also for the Boxing Day game beginning at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on December 26.
When Langer was asked how the kid will be welcomed for the first Test, he said: “I reckon he’ll be treated like (uncapped opener) Marcus Harris – come in for the first time in the changerooms, meet all the boys and like always when you come into that inner sanctum of the Baggy Green, it’s like joining the brotherhood,” the coach was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.
