Coming into the game from a 5-match losing streak in ODIs, Australia brought an end to it in the first ODI against New Zealand at Sydney. Electing to bat first, Australia found themselves in all sort of troubles losing their top order. But their captain Steven Smith with a brilliant 164 rescued his side along with Travis Head and Matthew Wade to post 324/8.

Chasing a big total, Martin Guptill’s 114 wasn’t enough for New Zealand as they were bowled out for 256 in 45th over. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during the game.

4 – Number of centuries Steven Smith has scored in ODIs as captain, 3rd most by an Australian captain. Ricky Ponting has 21 while Michael Clarke has 6 ODI tons as captain.

4 – Number of golden ducks Aaron Finch has in ODIs while opening, the joint most for an Australian. Adam Gilchrist also has 4 golden ducks while opening in ODIs.

7 – For the 7th consecutive time, Australia have posted a total of 320+ in ODIs while batting first at home. In fact, their 324/8 in this game is the lowest among the 7. Four out of the seven ODIs were played in Sydney.

8 – Number of times Australia have won in an ODI from 4 down inside 100 while batting first since 2011, the most times by any team in this period. Pakistan have won 7 times recovering from such position.

17 – Number of times Australia had a century stand for the 5th wicket in ODIs after losing first 4 wickets inside the 100-run mark, most for any team. Pakistan had 14 such stands.

73 – Runs conceded by Lockie Ferguson in the game, the most by any New Zealand player on ODI debut. Danny Morrison conceded 69 runs on his ODI debut.

164 – Runs scored by Steven Smith in this game, the joint highest individual score by an Australia captain in ODIs. Ricky Ponting scored 164 vs South Africa at Johannesburg in 2006.

164 – Steven Smith’s 164 is now the highest score in ODIs at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Previous highest was 162* by AB de Villiers against West Indies in 2015.

232 – Runs added by Australia after losing 4 wickets in an ODI, 2nd most for them in an ODI. They added 252 runs vs India in 2013 at Bangalore after losing 4 wickets.
