England avenged for the 0-4 series defeat in the Ashes by a dominant 4-1 victory in the 5-match ODI series where they looked far better side than the hosts. The Perth’s Optus Stadium which hosted its maiden International game witnessed a cracking game where England edged over the home team by a 12-run margin. In pursuit of the 260-run target, Australia collapsed from 189/4 to 247/10 courtesy of Tom Curran’s maiden 5-wicket haul.

All the stats and numbers that were recorded during the final ODI game of the series:

3 – With the figures of 5/35, Tom Curran became the 3rd England player to take an ODI 5-fer against Australia in Australia. Chris Woakes took 6/45 in the 2011 Brisbane ODI while Steven Finn took 5/71 in the 2015 CWC.

4 – Number of matches Australia lost in this series. These are the joint most matches they lost in a bilateral ODI series at home. South Africa also defeated the Aussies in four matches in the 2009 series.

5/31Andrew Tye became the 3rd Australian to take an ODI 5-fer in losing cause at home. Daniel Christian and Josh Hazlewood recorded figures of 5/31 in the lost games against Sri Lanka in 2012 and South Africa in 2014 respectively.

8 – Andrew Tye and Tom Curran taking their maiden 5-wicket hauls in this game is only the 8th such instance in ODI format. Overall, this is the 12th ODI where two bowlers bagged five-fers. The last such instance was in the 2017 ODI between Afghanistan and Ireland where Paul Stirling and Rashid Khan took six-fers; their maiden ODI 5-wicket hauls.

22 – The Optus Stadium in Perth became the 22nd venue of Australia to host an International match. Only India (50) and England (23) have more venues that hosted an International game.

36 – Number of runs Joe Root scored through boundaries in this series. He scored 226 runs in this series but hit only nine fours. Only four other players scored more than 200 runs in an ODI series/tournament with only 36 and fewer boundary runs. All those four are Australians in the ODI tournaments in Australia which makes Root’s 36 boundary runs the lowest in bilaterals.

73 – David Warner aggregated 73 runs in this ODI series which are the fewest by an Australian in a bilateral ODI series. (Min: 5 innings) Joe Burns accumulated 77 runs in the 5-match ODI series against England in 2015.

260 – The target of 260 that Australia failed to chase in this game is the lowest in a home ODI for Australia since 239 against Sri Lanka in 2012 which they lost by nine runs. This target is also the lowest Australia failed to chase in an ODI against England since the 226 in the 1995 Melbourne ODI. (Full 50-over games)
