Jonny Bairstow finally gave England team some reason to cheer on this already disastrous tour as he smashed a century on the third day of the fourth Test in Sydney. He got good company from Ben Stokes, who also mustered a fifty, as the duo shared 128-run partnership between them, their first century-stand since the year 2016.
Earlier in the day, opener Haseeb Hammed’s torrid run in the series continued as he got cleaned up by a typical Mitchell Starc delivery for just six runs, which is his fifth conseucitve single-digit figure in the series. Zak Crawley and Dawid Malan too couldn’t do much while captain Joe Root got out for a duck, only his second in the last 50 Test innings. It was all about Bairstow-Stokes show then, as the pair played their shots to put Australia under some sort of pressure.
Nathan Lyon finally dismissed Ben Stokes as Jos Buttler walked back into the dressing room without even opening his account. Mark wood played aggressively for his 39 runs off just 41 deliveries where he struck three maximums. Captain Cummins finally got rid of Wood but centurion Bairstow remained unbeaten on 103 with the visitors still trailing by 158. The hosts will look to get the prize scalp of dangerous-looking Bairstow early on the fourth day to try and start their second innings with the most runs on their side.
