Two cricketing superpowers India and Australia were up against each other in the opening match of the highly anticipated three-match One Day series at Sydney Cricket Ground. The Australian batters especially the skipper Aaron Finch and former captain Steve Smith stole the show as the hosts registered a victory by 66 runs after posting a humongous total of 374 on the board.

The toss went Aaron Finch’s way and he sent the Men in Blue to bowl first. The Australian batting line-up was on fire as all the players had come on the field with an intent to start hitting from the very first ball. Batting first, skipper Finch and David Warner stitched a remarkable opening stand as they collected 156 runs in 27.5 overs. The two batters had a slow start but they kept the scoreboard ticking by smartly stealing single or doubles. While Warner departed for 69 runs, Finch brought in his 17th ODI ton.

The Number 3 batsman Steve Smith also had different plans as he didn’t take any time to get going and started smashing the ball all over the park. He registered a scintillating century as he scored 105 runs off 66 deliveries. While Marcus Stoinis bagged a golden duck, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell looked in great touch as he scored 45 runs off just 19 balls. Thus, the hosts managed a mammoth target of 374 on the board.

Adam Zampa scripts victory for his team

Chasing 375, India got off to an explosive start as the new opening pair of Mayank Agarwal and Shikhar Dhawan collected a 53-run stand within 5 overs. However, the pacer Josh Hazlewood crushed all the hopes for the visiting contingent as he took three wickets. He named Mayank as his first scalp of the day, who was playing at 22. Indian skipper Virat Kohli was also unlucky as he lost his wicket to Hazelwood at 21 and was soon followed by Shreyas Iyer.

Though Hardik Pandya and Shikhar Dhawan tried to stabilize the team and brought India back in the chase, spinner Adam Zampa gave a much-needed breakthrough to his team in the 35th over by taking the wicket of the opening batsman.

Pandya and Jadeja were the last standing batting pair but Zampa again returned to name the wicket of Hardik who had scored a stunning 90 runs. After this, it was a comfortable victory for the hosts as Zampa emerged as the highest wicket-taker with 4 important wickets to his name.
