It was going to be the most crucial time of play in deciding which team holds the edge, in the end, it was the Indian team that is in control at stumps on day 4. India began with Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane at the crease. That partnership had to get them the runs and put them on top. Early wickets was what the Aussies were rather desperate for.
Flat bowling from their pacers both Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood helped the Indians on their mission. The fact that Tim Paine didn’t introduce Nathan Lyon their best hope right at the start also aided India’s cause. Both Pujara and Rahane looked comfortable at the crease. More importantly for India the vice-captain regained form after an extended dry run.
The No.3 batsman once again drained the life out of the Australian bowling attack and in the process a lot of it from his own body. He was cramping badly after having batted for over 450 balls combined in both the innings. Pujara also resorted to taking a shot of the pickle juice, that was tough for him to gulp down but works like magic.
He didn’t stay on longer and was dismissed for 71. Rohit Sharma the trusted name for the No.6 position who was expected to bat with the tail contributed just 1 run to the team’s second innings total. Rahane continued and had a few partnerships with Rishabh Pant who walked out with a licence and Ravichandra Ashwin. Pant hit three boundaries and a six in one over from Lyon but in the hyper-aggressive mode also lost his wicket on the first ball of his next over.
Thereafter the team didn’t add a lot of runs as all batsmen including Rahane played rash shots to give away their wickets. The last four wickets fell for just 25 runs and the target for Australia was 323.
The Aussies had a poor start as Aaron Finch was given out lbw against Ishant Sharma once again pretty early but the pacer had overstepped and he got a lifeline. He could just score 11 before being dismissed by Ashwin for bat pad on a delivery he didn’t hit. Before stumps the Aussies lost 3 more wickets and are 104/4.

Tim Paine on chasing 323:-
"I think we have cracked India's game plan here. All we need to do is send all our best batsmen at the lower order. So Khawaja and Marsh will bat at 7 and 8. We will easily win this without the help of any outside element." #AUSvIND pic.twitter.com/FShe5oJLTc
