Australia started the 3-match ODI series against India on a positive note defeating the visitors by 34 runs in the first ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground. A collective batting performance powered by fifties from Peter Handscomb, Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh helped Australia post 288/5. India, in response, were three wickets down for just four. Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni (51) rebuilt the chase with a 137-run stand. Rohit batted till the 46th over before getting out for a 129-ball 133 and India finished on 254/9.

A record win for Australia:

1000 – Australia became the first team to win 1000 matches in International cricket. They have won 558 ODI matches, 384 Tests and 58 T20Is thus far.


Unlucky Rohit:

4 – Rohit has scored four centuries in a losing cause against Australia in ODI cricket; the joint-most by any player in ODI losses against any team. Sachin Tendulkar against Pakistan, Kumar Sangakkara against India and Aaron Finch against England also have four ODI hundreds in losses.

Aged top seven:

1 – For the first time in its ODI history, Team India fielded a batting order with the top seven ageing 30 and more. Five countries have had registered 15 instances prior to India with a top seven of 30+ years in an ODI game.

A poor start and recovery for India:

4 – India lost their 3rd wicket at the score of four; the joint lowest by them in an ODI. They lost their 3rd wicket at the same score during the 2004 Adelaide ODI against Zimbabwe.

137 – Rohit and MS Dhoni put on 137 for the 4th wicket from the score of 3/4. This is the joint lowest score from where any team has put on a century stand for the 4th wicket in ODI cricket. Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman added 133 from the score of 3/4 in the 2004 VB Series game against Zimbabwe.

A low for Dhawan and Kohli:

1 – For the first time in his International career, Shikhar Dhawan bagged a golden duck. None of his previous eight ducks across all three formats for India was on the first ball.

3 – Three times in his last seven ODI innings Dhawan has turned out to be the first ODI wicket for a bowler. He got out to Bangladesh’s Nazmul Hossain in the Asia Cup final and was dismissed by Windies’ Oshane Thomas in the first game of the 5-match home ODI series.

9 – Virat Kohli’s batting average at the SCG in ODI cricket. His scores in ODI cricket at this venue read: 21, 3*, 1, 8 and 3. At the remaining six Australian venues, Kohli averages over 35 by scoring a century or two fifties.

Milestones for Indian players:

10050 – MS Dhoni completed 10000 runs for India in ODI cricket when he opened his account. He has scored 174 runs for Asia XI in three matches in this format.

101 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar complete 100 wickets in ODI cricket with the wicket of Aaron Finch. He took 96 matches to get to this milestone; the most by an Indian specialist bowler.
