India is currently taking on Australia in a four-match Test series. The first match at the Adelaide Oval was an absolute thriller wherein the visitors emerged victorious by 31 runs. The Virat Kohli-led unit came to Perth for the second Test amidst huge expectations. Despite inspiring performances from few individuals, India lost the match comprehensively by a big margin of 146 runs.
Although there are many reasons for the failure, experts and fans consider poor team selection as the root-cause. On that note, legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar came down heavily on Indian captain Virat Kohli and the head coach Ravi Shastri. The 69-year old also raised concerns on the role played by BCCI in this regard.
‘Roles of Kohli, Shastri and support staff need to be assessed’
The Mumbai-born veteran spoke to media that mistakes in team selection have cost India the Perth Test. He further added that the likes of Kohli and Shastri have been making the same mistake for a while.”We have been seeing this – the selection blunders that have been committed since the tour of South Africa. It has cost the team because it has lost matches which could’ve been won if the proper selection had been made”.
The former Indian opener, Gavaskar firmly insisted that the BCCI should reassess their roles if the team loses the next two Tests.”They(management) have to look at the combination of their team. If they do that then they can certainly win the next two matches. But if they don’t, and that too against this Australian team which does not have Steve Smith or David Warner, then the selectors need to think whether we are getting any benefit from this lot – the captain, coach and support staff”, said the former Indian captain as quoted by India Today.
