Steve Smith has insisted that he never had the ambition to play for rivals England despite a huge-contract offer from Surrey that was a huge thing to a young Smith. He was never tempted to play for England but said that a county experience was second to none. Further, the Australian skipper referred to it as ‘fantastic’ and showed his keen interest in playing county cricket in the future.

The right-hander’s stint in England domestic cricket goes way back in 2007 when he opted to play for Kent in the championship. After his run with Kent, the Australian drew attention from other clubs. Another positive for those county clubs were that since Smith’s mom is British, he would be termed as a ‘non-overseas player’.

Kent was the first club to offer Smith a place in the XI before he expressed his view that he would not want to represent England in the near future.

Smith went on to play for Surrey

As a result of that, the No.1 Test batsman at present went on to play for Surrey second XI instead where he played alongside Chris Jordan, Jason Roy and Rory Hamilton-Brown to name a few. According to ESPNCricinfo, the Australian was offered a three-year worth around 30,000 a year contract which he declined.

“It was a decision I had to make at the time, and I think I chose the right one. I never had ambitions to play for England as such, I always wanted to play for Australia,” he said.

“But I love how county cricket looked and how it was played. I thought it would be really good to play it. My good mate Sam Robson has taken the route to play county cricket and has done very well. He has played for England, obviously. But I never wanted to go down that path,” added the Australian skipper.

Smith concluded by saying that he would want to play another season or two in the County circuit, which according to him is brilliant.
