The second T20I between India and England was underway when Manish Pandey had a very lucky escape on the day. India were rocked back early with 3 quick wickets. KL Rahul marshaled along a lonely ride and had Pandey alongside him in the middle order. The departure of Yuvraj Singh saw the Karnataka batsman arrive at the crease.

In a very unusual incident, the ball hit the stumps and the bails lit up. However, they weren’t dislodged and hence Pandey survived a lucky scare. The action perspired in the 15th over of the Indian innings when Ben Stokes was brought back in the attack. Stokes bowled a short of length delivery to Pandey on the fifth ball of the over.

The batsman moved to the leg side and tried to glide it to third man. He totally misjudged the ball and it went past the stumps. There was a certain noise as the English camp looked excited. Stokes could not believe his luck as the bails had lit up before the keeper Jos Buttler collected it cleanly.

Pandey had a smile on his face and umpire Shamsuddin had a wry smile to share as well. Stokes had his hands on his head in dismay. Well, the entire scene has brought up the effectiveness of the stumps. As the commentator Nasser Hussain rightly cited, the incident brings into question how the run outs must usually be given. The indicator for the third umpire is usually the led lights glowing.

However, considering the regulations of the game, a batsman can be given out only if the bails are dislodged. Now, with this scene up in the picture, the run out scenario comes under the scanner. Should the third umpire only see the led lights glowing as the marker for a decision or should they wait for the bails to get dislodged. Getting back to the onfield action, it seems like the ball had hit the stumps and the bails came up and then got back to their position.
