Bangladesh started their campaign in New Zealand today with the first ODI at Christchurch. Home skipper Kane Williamson won the toss and decided to bat first. Powered by opener Tom Latham’s 121-ball 137 and Colin Munro’s quick fire 87 later in the inning the Kiwis posted a massive 342 runs as the target for the Bangladeshi team. Skipper Mashrafe Mortaza had to deploy six bowlers while all of them were carted around to all parts of the ground they fell short on the over rate.
Following the match International Cricket Council (ICC) in its media release mentioned that: Bangladesh has been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate against New Zealand during the first One-Day International in Christchurch on Monday.
Chris Broad of the Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees who was in charge for the match imposed the fine after Bangladesh were found to be one over short in terms of the time allowed. “In accordance with Article 2.5.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount.” The release stated.
For the same, Mashrafe has been fined 20 per cent of his match fee, while all the Bangladeshi players have been handed over 10 per cent fines. The Bangladesh skipper pleaded guilty to the offence and accepted the proposed sanction, and there was no need for a formal hearing.
The charge was initially pressed by the on-field umpires Wayne Knights and Chettihody Shamshuddin, third umpire Paul Reiffel and the fourth official Chris Brown.
New Zealand having posted 341 runs came hard at Bangladesh with the ball and bowled them out 77 runs short of the target.
