Bangladesh would not be convinced with their efforts at the end of Day 2 despite obtaining a 43-run lead in the first innings of the first Test against Australia. The visitors recovered from 33/4 amidst a 69-run stand between Peter Handscomb and Matt Renshaw and initiated another recovery with help of 49-run 9th wicket stand from 148/8 to finish at 217 in reply to Bangladesh’s 260. In the 2nd innings, Bangladesh scored 43/1 before stumps in the 2nd day’s play.

Here we look at all the stats and records created during the day’s play.

1Shakib Al Hasan is the first player to score 1000+ runs and take 50+ wickets at a venue in Test cricket. He thus far scored 1228 runs and picked up 54 wickets at the Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.

2 – This is only the 2nd time Steven Smith (8) has got out in single digits in his last 19 Test innings. He got out for eight runs in the first innings of the Bangalore Test against India.

2 – Shakib is only the 2nd player after Chris Cairns to score a fifty and take a 5-wicket haul in their 50th Test match.

4 – Shakib became the 4th player in Test cricket to take a 5-wicket haul against nine oppositions. He is the fastest among the four players having got there in 50 matches.

8 – This is the 8th time in Test cricket where Shakib Al Hasan has scored fifty-plus and taken a 5-wicket haul in the same Test. Only Ian Botham (11) has performed the double on more occasions.

16 – Number of five-wicket hauls for Shakib Al Hasan in Test cricket; the 6th most 5-fers for any player in this format since his debut in May 2007. Rangana Herath (31) has taken the most number of 5-wicket hauls in Tests in this period.

33Australia’s 33 runs for their first four wickets are the lowest by them in a Test inning in Asia since the Mumbai Test against India in 2004. They were four down for 33 runs in their 2nd innings of that game.

54 – Shakib became the first Bangladeshi player to take 50 wickets at a venue in Test cricket. He has taken 54 wickets so far at Dhaka in Tests while he has 48 at Chittagong.
