Besides scoring all those runs, he also stitched a couple of match-defining partnership with captain Steve Smith and Peter Handscomb in the first innings, to put his side in the driving seat. Handscomb played a valiant inning of 82 off 144 deliveries, smashing six boundaries in his knock.

The duo added 152 runs under pressure to take their side to a dominating position. The partnership came at the back of the 93-run stand with skipper Smith who brought up his 21st Test half century. Also, the knocks by Maxwell, Agar and Cartwright were as good as gold looking at the context of the game.
