After losing their last match against the Sydney Sixers, Brisbane Heats came back to winning ways and registered a comprehensive victory against the Perth Scorchers by 9 wickets to inch closer to the semi-final berth. Hard-hitting middle order batsman Chris Lynn was yet again the hero for the hosts as he smashed an unbeaten 98 in a mere 49 balls, an innings constructed with 3 hits to the fence and 11 maximums to ensure Heats reached the stiff target of 174 within 15 overs.

Perth Scorchers captain Michael Klinger won the toss and opted to bat. Shaun Marsh and Klinger began well but they were unable to push the scoring rate in the powerplay overs. Klinger was dismissed by Jack Wildermuth in the 4th over of the innings as he went for an uppish cut off a short delivery. The bounce made him a tad uncomfortable as he ended up skying it straight to the third man fielder Mark Steketee.

Ian Bell joined Marsh in the middle at the fall of Klinger’s wicket and looked in good touch with his two crisp boundaries. But with the score at 41/1, Bell fell to leg-spinner Mitchell Swepson as he attempted a flick of a full-length delivery. The ball turned just a bit and took the inside edge of the bat before hitting the pads and lobbed up straight in the air which was safely pouched by Jimmy Pearson behind the stumps.

The complexion of the match changed with Mitchell Marsh’s introduction in the middle. He started taking on the Brisbane Heats bowlers and went on the Launchpad. He struck some delightful shots during his quickfire innings of 70 of 41 balls. There was no respite for the bowlers as Marsh went on pounding them all over the ground. His innings was constructed with five hits to the fence and three maximums. He was eventually dismissed in the 19th over but by then he has helped the Scorchers to put up a decent total on the board. At the end of their allotted 20 overs the visitors finished at 173/6.

Chasing a stiff target openers Brendon McCullum and Jimmy Pearson began pretty well with the latter hitting a six and a four in the first two balls of the innings. He was dismissed in the 3rd over by David Willey as he went for yet another expansive heave. He attempted a sweep which breached his defence and hit the timbers. Chris Lynn joined McCullum in the middle and despite the fall of the Pearson’s wicket there was no respite for the bowlers. McCullum struck a four and a six in the very over where Pearson got out and Lynn took matters in his own hands in the 6th over where he struck Jhye Richardson for two humongous sixes. It was just the beginning of a blitz which struck the Scorchers and they never recovered from that.

Lynn again hit a beautiful six of Mitchell Johnson in the 7th over, over the long on region. McCullum who had begun to accelerate started batting 2nd fiddle and allowed Lynn to go hammers and tongs. What a scintillating display of batsmanship it was from the Man in form. He kept on smashing all the bowlers to the nooks and corners of the Gabba and made a mockery of the Scorcher’s bowling line-up.

Despite McCullum playing 2nd fiddle he remained unbeaten on a well-deserved half-century of a mere 31 balls and struck four fours and three sixes during his supporting innings. Lynn struck two sixes in the 15th over of the innings of the bowling of Ashton Agar to finish off the match for the hosts. He was simply marvellous with his strokeplay and remained unbeaten just two short of what would have been a well-deserved century. His innings contained only 3 fours and 11 sixes which proves the muscle power this man possess.

With the loss Perth moved to the 2nd position just behind Brisbane Heats with 3 wins and 2 losses to their names. Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Renegades are the other frontrunners for the Semi-final berth.
