Brisbane Heat left-arm seamer Josh Lalor achieved a special feat in the Big Bash League (BBL) on Friday when he took his fourth hat-trick in the tournament. However, it was not that those who were present on the occasion realised his latest hat-trick, including Lalor himself and his team mates. Former Australia wicket-keeper Adam Gilchrist, who was commentating for the game, intervened to let everybody know about Lalor’s achievement.
It happened towards the end of the Perth Scorchers’ innings at the Gabba in Brisbane. Lalor got Andrew Tye caught by Chris Lynn, the Heat skipper, in the final ball of the 18th over. Jack Prestwidge then bowled the 19th over in which he gave nine runs and Lalor was back to bowl the final over of the innings.
He dismissed Matt Kelly in the very first delivery which was a good length one but the batsmen changed their ends bringing Nick Hobson to strike. Hobson, the set batsman on 43 off 34 balls at the moment, swung his bat to the left side to play a delivery that was on the middle only to find an edge that went high and caught by wicket-keeper Jimmy Peirson.
Even the bowler was not aware about the split hat-trick
The split hat-trick was the fourth Josh Lalor completed in the BBL but not many noticed it since his first of the three wickets came an over earlier. The bowler also went back to his position and was having a mini talk with Lynn, perhaps strategizing for what they thought was the hat-trick ball but the ground announcer then came up with an applause for Lalor and it was heard by fielder Alex Ross.
Ross then ran up to Lalor to inform that he has already achieved a hat-trick. The wicket-keeper, Peirson, was also left stunned when Gilchrist doing commentary team for Fox Sports told him the same when he mic’d up during the game. “Was that a hat-trick? You’re kidding,” he said, adding that they thought the third ball of the final over was the hat-trick delivery.

Josh Lalor took the fourth hat-trick in Big Bash history… and not a single player on the field knew about it! 🙄
