Sydney Sixers began their title defence with a 16-run defeat in the hands of the Hobart Hurricanes in the tournament opener. Both the openers of Hobart got out for a duck after they lost the toss. However, Colin Ingram (55 off 42) and Timothy David (58 off 35) struck fifties to lift Hurricanes to a fighting total of 178/8.

Despite losing Philippe in the very first over, James Vince (67 off 41) and Jack Edwards (47 off 39) put on 116 for the 2nd wicket in only 13 overs. But the Sixers failed to cope up with the pace attack of Hurricanes and got only 44 runs in the 6.2 overs after Vince’s dismissal.

Yet another defeat in Hobart for the Sixers:

3 – Sydney Sixers now have lost each of their last three matches in the BBL at the Hobart’s Bellerive Oval. Sixers lost to the Hurricanes by five runs in the 2017-18 season at the venue and by five wickets during 2018-19. Overall, the Sixers have a win-loss record of 2-4 in the BBL at the Bellerive Oval.

5 – The 16-run defeat in Hobart has brought an end to Sydney Sixers’ 5-match winning streak in the Big Bash League. The Sixers won each of their last five matches during the 2019-20 season on their way to winning the tournament.


Hurricanes overcome poorest of starts:

3 – Both the openers of Hobart Hurricanes bagged during this game which became only the 3rd instance of a team’s openers registering duck in the same BBL match.

Melbourne Stars was the first to have both openers dismissing for ducks in the same BBL game during the 2016-17 edition against the Perth Scorchers. Later in the 2018-19 season, it was the openers of Scorchers who got out which opening their account against the Hobart team.


A record duck for D’Arcy:

5 – D’Arcy Short’s duck during the BBL 2020-21 opener is now his 5th duck in the Big Bash League. He is now the first player to be dismissed for a duck as many as five times while playing for the Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL going past Tim Paine’s four ducks.

0 – The golden duck of D’Arcy Short during HUR vs SIX match brought an end to his streak of 30+ scores against the Sydney Sixers in the BBL. The Hobart opening batsman scored no less than 32 runs in the five BBL games over the Sixers before the 2020-21 season.


Christian tops BBL charts:

89 – Daniel Christian now become the most capped player of the Big Bash League with as many as 89 appearances. Christian went past Ben Laughlin in this process who has featured in 88 BBL matches.

6 – Sydney Sixers is the 4th team in BBL for which Daniel Christian has appeared in at least one game. Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Renegades are the other three teams for which Christian has played at least one game in the BBL. Alex Hales, Joe Mennie, Ben Dunk, Nathan Reardon and Josh Lalor are the other players to have featured in at least one Big Bash League game for as many as four different franchises.

  


David shines in the middle-order:

58 – Timothy David became the first player to score a fifty in the BBL against Sydney Sixers while batting at No.6 or a lower position. Shakib Al Hasan for Adelaide Strikers in 2013-14 and Andrew Flintoff for Brisbane Heat in 2014-15 respectively scored 46 runs apiece in a BBL game against the Sixers while batting outside top five. David’s 58 is the 5th half-century for Hurricanes by a player batting outside top five in the Big Bash League.


A big stand for the Sixers:

116 – The partnership of 116 between James Vince and Jack Edwards is now the 3rd highest stand of Sydney Sixers for any wicket in the BBL. Vince put on an unbeaten 167-run stand with Joshua Philippe in 2018-19 for the 2nd wicket also against the Hurricanes while Daniel Hughes and Jordan Silk put on 124 for the 4th wicket against Perth Scorchers also during the 2018-19 season.
