BBL 2021-22: Umpire gives Ashton Turner out caught behind, then quickly reverses his decision

The on-field umpire’s gestures in the Big Bash League (BBL) encounter between the Melbourne Stars and the Perth Scorchers hogged the limelight. The incident took place during the 5th ball of the 14th over of the Perth Scorchers innings.

Xavier Crone bowled a short delivery to Ashton Turner, and the Scorchers’ skipper went for the pull shot. However, the ball hit his helmet and went through to the keeper.

The Melbourne Stars’ players appealed, and the umpire, Bruce Oxenford initially raised the finger. However, he quickly realized that the ball struck Turner’s helmet, and reversed his decision.

And, the official Twitter handle of KFC Big Bash League (BBL) posted a video of the incident. “Xavier Crone had his first BBL wicket on debut – for all of three seconds,” read the tweet.

Perth Scorchers beat Melbourne Stars by 50 runs

Batting first, the Perth Scorchers posted a total of 180/8 in their 20-over quota. Opener Kurtis Patterson scored a 39-ball 54, while Colin Munro scored a blazing 40 at a strike rate of 200.

Also, skipper Ashton Turner contributed a handy 27 off 19 deliveries. Haris Rauf and Qais Ahmad scalped 2 wickets each with the ball for the Melbourne Stars outfit.

In reply, the Melbourne Stars fell short of the target by 50 runs and were bowled out for 130 in their allotted 20 overs. Joe Clarke top-scored for the Stars with a fluent 52 off 32 deliveries. Tom Rogers also helped himself to a 25-ball 32 as well.

The Perth Scorchers have now moved to the top of the points table with this superb win, and have now posted 7 wins in 8 matches. On the other hand, the Stars are placed at the 6th spot.
