The ongoing edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is running at full throttle. This is something that the cricket board, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) would be very proud of at the moment. A plethora of big names are featuring in the tournament this season. Recently, the likes of Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum alo joined the tournament to light up the overseas firepower even more.

However, amidst all this, the very basic purpose of the tournament seems to be heading in no direction. The tournaments like the BPL are meant for the domestic players so that they can come out and perform at a stage that looks like an international arena. The young domestic players see this as an opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in the world cricket.

However, the BPL seems to be losing its plot right there. The performances of the local cricketers has been far from being impressive in the season thus far. There are not many big performances to boast about at the moment. Taking this into consideration, the BCB is now pondering over having another T20 league, solely for the local players.

A worrying concern

The chief of the BPL governing council admitted that the performances of the local players has been a worrying factor for the board. While the idea looks like a bright one on paper and in the thought processes, it will be interesting to see if that would manage to garner the same amount of craze and audiences at the venues. The very essence of the T20 leagues are the big names. Hence, there is certainly lot to ponder for the BCB in this regard.

“The local players are not playing well in BPL. This is a thing to worry about. We are thinking to create a new T20 tournament next year in which only local cricketers will participate,” BCB Governing Council’s member Ismail Haider quoted as per the quotes in bdcrictime.
