The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly has tested positive for Covid 19 amidst the threats of the third wave in the nation. However, as per reports, he is in a stable state currently. The reports of the same came in the night and the former India skipper is currently in isolation.

As per the BCCI sources, Ganguly was admitted to the hospital after his RT-PCR test report turned out to be positive. Over the past few days, there has been an increase in the number of Covid-19 positive infections in various parts of India. The situation is reported to be more challenging in Delhi and Mumbai in terms of new cases especially of the new variant Omicron.

“BCCI President and former India captain Sourav Ganguly admitted to hospital after testing positive for Covid-19,” a BCCI source said as quoted by HT.

The emergence of this new variant of the Covid 19 had previously cast doubts on India’s series in South Africa. Both the countries are scheduled to play three Tests and as many ODIs. However, ahead of the series, there were heated discussions on the captaincy matter.

Ganguly had previously reckoned that he had personally asked Kohli to not step down as the T20I skipper. However, in a pre-series press conference, the Indian Test skipper cleared all the confusion around it. He said that he wasn’t asked by any of the board members to not give up the captaincy of the shortest format.

“I was contacted one-and-a-half hours before the selection meeting on December 8. The chief selector discussed with me the Test team to which we both agreed. Before ending the call, I was told that the five selectors have decided that I won’t be the ODI captain, which I was fine with. After the selection call, we chatted about it briefly. There was no communication after I had quit T20 captaincy,” Kohli had said.

India has currently locked horns with the Proteas for the first Test. The Virat Kohli-led side dominated the proceedings on Day 1 as KL Rahul brought up an impressive century. Rain interrupted the match on Day 2 as no play was possible.
