BCCI Secretary Anurag Thakur felicitates Kumar Sangakkara: The BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur felicitated batting great Kumar Sangakkara before the start of the 1st days play of the second Test between Sri Lanka and India, which marks the farewell match for the legendary cricketer.
“Kumar Sangakkara is a true legend of the game. His conduct both on and off the field has been exemplary. He is one of the most consistent performers of our times and a role model for youngsters around the world. On behalf of the BCCI, I would like to wish him the very best for his future endeavours,” BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur said.
BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya also congratulated Sangakkara on a glorious career that spanned over 15 years. “Kumar Sangakkara has not only been a true asset for Sri Lankan cricket but also a great ambassador for the game of cricket. I congratulate him on all his achievements and wish him a happy and successful life post retirement,” a BCCI release quoted Dalmiya as saying.
After the felicitation event, Sangakkara walked out to a guard of honour from a bunch of school cricketers and a rousing ovation from those gathered at the P. Sara Oval. In his 15-year international career, Sangakkara has so far scored 12,350 Test runs with 38 centuries at an average of 57.71. In 404 ODIs, he has scored 14,234 runs with 25 tons and a staggering 93 half-centuries.
Sri Lanka will be looking to win the second Test and seal the 3-Test series to give Sangakkara a fitting farewell. India lost the first Test at Galle by 63 runs after dominating the first two days. Day one of Sanga’s farewell Test ended with the visitors on 319/6. After the early strikes from Prasad, the Indians hit back with a solid partnership between Rahul and Kohli to bail them out of trouble. The wicket of Rohit in the final over ensured the game hung in balance at stumps.
